How to Make a Referral to Music Therapy Services
We are delighted that you are considering making a referral to music therapy. Please have a look at our What is Music Therapy? page for lots of information about how music therapy helps and some video of music therapy sessions.
As well as the information on this website we would be delighted to meet with you to talk to you about the work and discuss your hopes for music therapy intervention.
The referral process is as follows:
1) Please complete our referral form, which you can find here.
Alternatively download the PDF and email or post to Waves.
The referral form is essential and helps to give us some background about the person or people that you are referring to our service -their emotional needs, behaviours, history, medical history and anything significant that you wish to share.
We can also arrange to visit you and complete the form together and have time to answer any questions.
2) Waiting lists:
Depending upon your location and the availability of our therapists we aim to begin sessions within 1 month of receiving the referral form.
3) Assessment:
We recommend a 3-week assessment where a music therapy sessions is held at the same time and in the same place over three consecutive weeks.
The first session will be an observation followed by two full therapy sessions.
After this assessment we prepare and submit a short report and make recommendations and plans for further music therapy work.
The cost for the full assessment is £150
3) The work:
After a 3 week assessment and assessment report we continue weekly sessions. More detailed reports are submitted annually, for Annual Reviews or on request and the work is evaluated constantly.
It is important that endings are prepared for and so the duration of therapy should be decided when the work begins.
4) Audio and Video
We ask that you consider giving permission for video recording of sessions. As music therapy is usually just the therapist and the client video helps us to evaluate and think about the work. Importantly it also helps us to communicate with you so that you can see and be part of the process.
You can download an audio/ visual permission form here-
5) Cost
Individual music therapy sessions are between £48-55 depending upon the duration of the session and the location.
Group music therapy sessions are between £70-90 depending upon the number of participants in the group and the duration of the session.
We do not want cost to be a barrier to anyone accessing service and we work hard to fundraise and obtain grants so that everyone who seeks to engage in music therapy, can. Please contact us for more information.
